🦘 Lemur Kisses & Kangaroo Cuddles: Behind the Scenes at Long Tail Farm with Ashlynn Smith

Ashlynn Smith, owner of Long Tail Farms is holding Sugar, a 13 week only Lemur. Ashlynn says the currently have 9 lemurs on the farm. (I think I need one)

07/30/2025 – What started with a single kangaroo quickly turned into a full-blown exotic animal adventure—and Owasso is better for it! We sat down with Ashlynn Smith, the animal-loving heart behind Long Tail Farm and her right hand bestie Derek Brusenski on Tuesday, to learn how a dream turned into a family-friendly destination full of lemurs, kangaroos, fluffy sheep, bouncy baby goats, a highland cow and more, as well as unforgettable memories.  They are located off Highway 20 on the east side of Owasso.

🌟 From One Kangaroo to a Whole Zoo

Ashlynn’s journey into exotic animal care started in January with one incredible gift from her husband: a kangaroo.

Derek Brusenski is holding 7 month old Ruby, who is one of two Kangaroos at Long Tail Farm

“I fell in love with this world,” she says. “Friends and family wanted to meet her, so I put a post on Facebook—and just like that, we were booked out months in advance!”

Today, Long Tail Farm is more than just a place to pet animals. It features a climate-controlled party room, a playground, a picnic area, and a whole lot of personality. It’s not just a petting zoo—it’s an experience.

🐾 Why Exotic Animals?

Ashlynn has always been drawn to the unique and unusual.

“I started with wallabies and kangaroos, and it spiraled from there. I never thought I’d own a petting zoo!”

She even took care of a baby camel for a while whose mother had rejected it. Choosing new animal residents involves research, chats with other zoos, and a healthy dose of “let’s just do it.”

I got to cuddle with both Sugar and Ruby. Sugar was full of kisses and playfulness. I think I see a lemur in my future 🙂

🐍 A Day in the Life

What’s life like on the farm? Two words: early bottles.

“It’s early mornings, late nights, and lots of bottle-feeding. But every moment is worth it.”

From sunrise snuggles to evening mischief, each day is packed with caring for animals and creating magical moments for visitors.

❤️ Putting Animal Care First

At Long Tail Farm, the animals’ comfort always comes first.

Anna Anderson happened by my office while they were here, and loved on Ruby (and sugar too)

“We socialize animals from the start—bottle feeding, snuggles, even introducing them to our family. If they’re not in the mood for an event, they stay home. We let the animals decide.”

And with personalities this big, it’s easy to see why!

😂 Lemur Trouble & Coatimundi Shenanigans

Every animal has its quirks—and some of them are hilarious.

  • The lemurs have been known to swipe sunglasses and make a run for it.

  • The snakes? They’ll climb your head like it’s their own jungle gym.

  • And the coatimundi? He thinks he’s the farm’s class clown—hitching rides on kangaroos and racing the rabbits!

🐮 What to Expect on a Farm Tour

Long Tail’s private farm tours are just $15/person and include:

  • Hand-feeding the animals

  • Photo ops with fun backdrops

  • Meeting baby animals (yes, including kangaroos!)

And if you can’t make it to the farm, no worries—they’ll bring the fun to you! From school programs to birthday parties, Long Tail’s mobile events are always a hit.

👩‍🏫 Learning with Lemurs

Long Tail doesn’t just entertain—they educate, too!

“We offer education for all ages and even teach regularly at a local co-op.”

Now with STEM Days on Tuesdays and Family Days every Sunday, learning has never been so cuddly.

💞 Community Roots & Big Dreams

Ashlynn and the team love giving back.

“We’ve done free pop-ups, donated to local teams, and we just launched our nonprofit, Long Tail Learning, to provide discounted and free educational experiences for families.”

Follow them on Facebook for updates on events, animal additions, and fun surprises!

🦄 Sugar the Lemur & Other Farm Favorites

Picking a favorite animal is almost impossible.

“It’s like picking a favorite child… but I have one! Sugar, our red ruffed lemur. She’s mischievous, fun, cuddly, and smart—like a sour patch kid.”

As for a dream addition to the farm? Ashlynn says:

“A rhino! They’re like unicorns.”
