01/03/2018 – The Rogers County Literacy Council (RCLC) will offer Computer Literacy for Beginners on Mondays and Saturdays beginning in late January through mid-March. Eight spaces are available for ten sessions free of charge.
The first session will take place on Monday, January 29, 2018 in the Will Rogers Library Multipurpose Room, located at 1515 N. Florence Ave. in Claremore. Future classes will occur every other Monday and every Saturday in February and early March.
In our technology-based culture, computer literacy may be as important as being able to read, write, and figure. For many occupations, basic computer skills are essential. To be able to apply for jobs, candidates must know how to create an email account, use online application systems, and attach or upload documents. Once hired for a position, employees may be required to conduct research on the Internet, compose documents in Microsoft Word, or create a PowerPoint presentation. As Brian Mogren, career and placement director at Saint Paul College, notes: “The computer is the central piece of every job, so workers need to be computer literate.”
Aside from employment, computers are a focal point of our everyday lives. Whether someone wants to browse photos on Facebook or Instagram, use smartphone applications to read the latest news or weather reports, listen to digital music, or shop online, computer literacy offers new possibilities for anyone to explore. The ability to use computers, tablets, and smartphones with ease may be one of the most important aspects of 21st century life.
With the generous support of the Sarkeys Foundation, the Rogers County Literacy Council is delighted to offer ten sessions free of charge to anyone wanting to acquire basic computer skills. We will learn how to create email accounts, become familiar with online applications and computer programs, and use search engines to discover web-based sources of information. We will discuss how, as good “digital citizens,” we must understand how to use the Internet ethically and effectively.
Classes will be held in the Multipurpose Room at the Will Rogers Public Library, 918-341-1564.
