August 17, 2016, Tulsa, Okla. — St. John Health System’s newest medical clinic is not your usual doctor’s visit – it requires no walking in. Patients with minor health issues or illnesses are now able to receive care whenever and wherever they need it through St. John’s virtual care service, St. John Clinic OnDemand.

The first virtual care program of its kind in the Tulsa area, patients are able to access board-certified physicians and nurse practitioners in real-time 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The St. John Clinic OnDemand Internet-based solution connects patients to providers via video through smartphones, tablets or computers. No insurance is required, and visits cost a flat fee of $49.

“We recognize that doctor’s visits are sometimes hard to fit into life, especially when you or a loved one is feeling bad,” said Jason Lepak, MD, St. John Health System virtual care physician lead.  “St. John believes this innovative option to seeking medical care for non-emergencies is the perfect complement to our already robust health services offering. Our patients now have the option to seek care through St. John OnDemand virtual visits, schedule reservations online for urgent care, or visit their doctors in person.”

St. John Clinic OnDemand can treat a variety of minor illnesses such as cold and flu symptoms, pink eye, rash, sore throat, urinary tract infection, fever and more. Patients can access the virtual visit portal by visiting www.stjohnondemand.com. Once the virtual visit begins via video, the medical provider will facilitate a medical visit similar to the same experience as an in-office medical visit with questions to help understand the nature of the health concern and determine treatment options.

St. John Clinic OnDemand providers will determine within the first three minutes of a virtual medical visit if the patient’s condition would be better treated at a nearby medical facility. If so, the patient is not charged a fee for the virtual medical visit.

“Oklahomans will now have access to some of the most innovative technology through the new virtual care St. John OnDemand program,” said Chris Young, Vice President of New Virtual Market Development and Incubations for Ascension. “This is the type of consumer offering that is in alignment with our national approach of providing personalized care throughout our 24 health system markets.”

According to Lepak, virtual visits typically last about 20 minutes or longer if needed, and any prescriptions deemed clinically appropriate will be called in to the patient’s preferred pharmacy. “Those individuals with more serious issues will be referred to a St. John Clinic physician’s office, St. John Urgent Care or St. John emergency department, as appropriate,” said Lepak. After the virtual visit concludes, patients will receive a summary of the visit that is accessible via an online account.
