ask the expertQuestion:

When is a hysterectomy necessary?

Answer:

The best way to determine when a hysterectomy is necessary is when you and your doctor feel it is time. The need for a hysterectomy (the removal of the uterus and often the cervix) occurs for many different reasons.  For some, it is due to a malignancy.  For others, they may experience heavy menses, pain or uterine fibroids (tumors in the uterus).

The need for a hysterectomy normally occurs after medical therapies have been tried and failed.  With the exception of malignancy, the need for a hysterectomy usually arises when it begins to have a negative effect on a woman’s quality of life. Who wants to live with constant pain?  Who wants to worry about bleeding to the point of embarrassment?  The answer is no one.  That point, however, is different for each woman.  So talk to your doctor early and often about your symptoms.  This allows treatment to start with the best outcomes possible.
