What does a routine Pap smear show? What other tests should I ask for?
Answer:
A routine well woman exam should include both a breast and pelvic exam. When we collect a pap smear, we scrape cells off the cervix and a pathologist reviews them under a microscope to evaluate for cervical cancer. Other tests you should ask about depend on risk factors related to your family history, your age and your personal history, so it is hard to discuss in this type of avenue. However, in general, you could ask about a mammogram, bone density testing, colonoscopy and routine blood work like blood count, thyroid and cholesterol testing.
