Cherokee Nation Calendar of Events for August
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. —The Cherokee Nation will host the 62nd Annual Cherokee National Holiday on Labor Day weekend, as well as several other events throughout the month of August. Calendar items are as follows:
Aug. 2
7:30 a.m. – Cherokee Nation Healthy Nation Wings Program will sponsor the Bell Powwow 5K Run at the Bell community building in Stilwell. Fun run starts at 7:35 a.m. Pre-registration costs $15. Race day is $20. Registration begins at 6 a.m. For more information, call 918-316-8088 or 918-316-2396.
Aug. 4

Aug. 5
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. – Cherokee Nation blood drive in the Tsa-La-Gi community room, behind the Restaurant of the Cherokees in Tahlequah. For more information, call 918-453-5000 ext. 5844.
Aug. 7
5 to 7 p.m. – Cherokee Nation Child Support Services will host “Hula on in for some family fun” at Norris Park in Tahlequah in recognition of Child Support Awareness Month. There will be games, free hot dogs, a live band and more. For more information, call 918-453-5444.

Aug. 9

6:30 to 9:30 p.m. – Cherokee Arts Center in Tahlequah will host a “Brush Strokes” painting class. For more information, call 918-453-5728.
Aug. 14
10 to 11 a.m. – Cherokee Nation Cultural Tourism will hold a genealogy class as part of its preservation series. The class will be held at the Cherokee National Supreme Court Museum in Tahlequah, 122 E. Keetoowah St. Admission is free, but attendees must register at www.cherokeegiftshop.com. 7:30 p.m. – “Nanyehi: The Story of Nancy Ward” will be performed at The Joint inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa. The play was written by Cherokee songwriter Becky Hobbs and playwright Nick Sweet and stars Michelle Honaker. Shows will also be on Aug. 22 and 23. Tickets are $15. - Wednesdays, 6 to 8 p.m. – loom weaving taught by Cherokee National Treasure Dorothy Ice
- Thursdays, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. – silversmithing taught by Steve Mashburn
- Fridays, 7 to 9 p.m. – life drawing
- Saturdays, by appointment – basic assemblage taught by Robert Shinn
- Saturdays, noon to 2 p.m. – loom weaving taught by Cherokee National Treasure Dorothy Ice
