Cherokee Nation calendar of events in February

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. —The Cherokee Nation will make its annual contribution to nearly 100 school districts within the 14-county tribal jurisdiction in February. The tribe also hosts free tax preparation for qualified individuals, art classes and more. Events are as follows:

Feb. 1

9 a.m. to 2 p.m. – Kick-off for the Cherokee Arts Center and Spider Gallery’s “Tahlequah Artist Show” at the Cort Mall, 215 S. Muskogee Ave., Tahlequah. Show continues through the end of the month. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday. For more information, call 918-453-5524.

Feb. 3

9 a.m. – The Cherokee Nation, in partnership with the IRS, begins offering free tax preparation for qualifying families at several sites through April 15. Dates and times vary by location. Services are by appointment only. Taxes can also be prepared online at http://www.myfreetaxes.com/CNCherokeeNationFSA. For more information, call 918-453-5536.

8 a.m. – Cherokee Nation College Resource Center begins accepting undergraduate scholarship applications for the fall 2014 semester. Applications are available athttps://scholarships.cherokee.org. The early deadline for high school seniors is April 4. Final deadline is June 6. For more information, call 918-453-5465.

8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. – Will Rogers Health Center, 1020 Lenape Drive, Nowata, opens a walk-in clinic for all vaccinations every Monday in February. Patients can also call the public health nurse to schedule an appointment for vaccinations throughout the week. For more information, call 918-273-7523.

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Tribal registration help with citizenship applications in Jay. Sam Hider Health Center, 1015 Washbourne St. Call 918-253-4271 for more information.

Feb. 4

1:30 to 2:30 p.m. – World Cancer Day information fair in the Tsa-La-Gi community room located behind the Restaurant of the Cherokees in Tahlequah. Free information on Cherokee Nation Cancer Programs and snacks will be given. For more information, call 918-453-5555.

Feb 6.

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Cherokee Nation offers free tax preparation at Will Rogers Health Center, 1020 Lenape Drive, Nowata, for families that earned less than $51,567 last year. For more information and to schedule an appointment, call 918-342-6803.

Feb. 7

5 p.m. – Deadline to apply for the Elders in Need program for 2014. Elders In Need helps elders with the payment of utilities twice a year. For eligibility guidelines and more information, call Crystal Thomas at 918-453-5627.

Feb. 10

8 a.m. – Cherokee Nation Career Services begins accepting applications for the Summer Youth Employment Program. Applications will be accepted through April 18. Applicants must be between 16 and 21 years of age, a citizen of a federally recognized tribe and reside within the 14-county tribal jurisdiction. For more information, call 918-453-5555.

8 a.m. – Cherokee Nation Cultural Tourism begins accepting applications from schools to receive grants to participate in history field trips this spring. Applications are available atwww.cherokeetourismok.com until March 10. For more information, call 918-384-7787.

5:30 to 9:30 p.m. – The Cherokee Nation Marshal Service begins a free Rape Aggression Defense women’s personal safety course in the Cherokee ballroom behind the Restaurant of the Cherokees in Tahlequah. Classes continue on Feb. 12-13 at the same time. For more information, call 918-207-3800.

Feb. 11

9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. – Cherokee Nation blood drive in the Tsa-La-Gi community room, behind the Restaurant of the Cherokees in Tahlequah. Open to the public. For more information, call Public Health Nursing at 918-453-5000 ext. 5841.

Feb. 13

Feb. 14

10 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Cherokee Nation’s Public School Appreciation Day will be held at the Sequoyah High School gym in Tahlequah. The event is for school superintendents or representatives only.

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Tribal Registration help with citizenship applications in Sallisaw sub-office, 110 N. Elm. Call 918-775-6226 for more information.

Feb. 19

3:30 to 6 p.m. – College Resource Center will be at Rogers State University in Claremore for a college prep workshop for high school juniors and seniors, providing information on Cherokee Nation scholarships, college admissions and more. For more information, call Ashlee Chaudoin at 918-316-4865.

Feb. 20

6 p.m. – A cancer survivor group meeting will be held at the Healthy Living Campus, building 3 conference room, in Tahlequah, 1400 S. Hensley Drive. The meeting provides ongoing support for survivors and their families and caregivers. For more information, call Mary Owl at 918-525-2717.

Feb. 26

The Cherokee Arts Center in Tahlequah also hosts the following weekly classes:

  • Wednesdays, 6 to 8 p.m. – Loom Weaving taught by Cherokee National Treasure Dorothy Ice
  • Thursdays, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. – Metalsmithing taught by Steve Mashburn
  • Saturdays, 10 a.m. to noon – Basic Assemblage taught by Robert Shinn
  • Saturdays, noon to 4 p.m. – Loom Weaving taught by Cherokee National Treasure Dorothy Ice
