Cherokee Nation calendar of events in November

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — The Cherokee Nation is hosting several events in November, including a trail ride and 5k runs to raise awareness against diabetes and cancer. Here are calendar events for the month of November.

Nov. 1

2 to 2:30 p.m. – Cherokee Nation Health Services and Cherokee Nation Diabetes Program will host a Stop Diabetes Walk at the W.W. Keeler Complex in Tahlequah. The walk will start at the Cherokee Nation Warrior Memorial, north of the complex.

Nov. 2

7 a.m. – Cherokee Nation Healthy Nation will host a 5k run in Vinita. Race begins and ends at the Craig County Courthouse. Registration begins at 7 a.m., and the fun run will start at 8 a.m., with the 5k starting at 8:15 a.m. The 5k and fun run pre-registration fees are $20 and $15, respectively, while race day fees are $25 and $20. 9 a.m. – Cherokee Nation Natural Resources will host a trail ride at Sallisaw Creek Park. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and rides will be held at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Lunch will be served at noon. For more information, contact Gunter Gulager at 918-772-7701 or [email protected].

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. – The Cherokee Arts Center in Tahlequah will host a Cherokee stone pipe workshop taught by Jim Roax. The class costs $25. For information, contact Cherokee Arts Center at 918-453-5728 or [email protected].

Nov. 4

1 p.m. – Principal Chief Bill John Baker will sign a proclamation at the W.W. Keeler Complex in Tahlequah, declaring November as Diabetes Awareness Month in the Cherokee Nation. For more information, contact Erika Williams at 918-453-5246.

Nov. 5

1 to 8 p.m. – The Cherokee Nation’s registration department will be doing photo ID citizenship cards at the Delaware County Fairgrounds in Jay. Tribal Councilor Harley Buzzard will host a community meeting for District 10 at 5:30 p.m. with information on Cherokee Nation services. Food will be provided. 2 p.m. –“History of the Cherokee National Treasures” presented by Cherokee National Treasure Shawna Cain will be held at the W.W. Keeler Complex Tribal Council chambers inTahlequah. The lecture is part of a series of history presentations celebrating Native American Heritage Month at the Cherokee Nation. 2 to 2:30 p.m. – Cherokee Nation Health Services and Cherokee Nation Diabetes Program will host a Stop Diabetes Walk at the Redbird Smith Health Center in Sallisaw.

Nov. 7

Noon to 12:30 p.m. – Cherokee Nation Health Services and Cherokee Nation Diabetes Prevention Program will host a “Stop Diabetes Walk” at Three Rivers Health Center inMuskogee.

1 to 8 p.m. – Cherokee Nation’s registration department will be doing photo ID citizenship cards at the Nowata County Fairgrounds in Nowata. Tribal Councilor Dick Lay will host a community meeting for District 12 at 5:30 p.m. with information on Cherokee Nation services. Food will be provided. 2 to 2:30 p.m. – Cherokee Nation Health Services and Cherokee Nation Diabetes Prevention Program will host a “Stop Diabetes Walk” at the A-Mo Health Center in Salina.

Nov. 8

9 a.m. – The Cherokee Nation invites veterans to attend a special breakfast in the new Cherokee Veterans Center in Tahlequah. A wreath ceremony will follow at the Cherokee Warrior Memorial, next to the W.W. Keeler Complex, 17675 Muskogee Ave. For more information, contact Rae Wacoche at 918-453-5252.

2 to 2:30 p.m. – Cherokee Nation Health Services and Cherokee Nation Diabetes Program will host a Stop Diabetes Walk at the Sam Hider Health Center in Jay.

Nov. 9

7 a.m. – Cherokee Nation Health Services and Cherokee Nation Diabetes Prevention Program will host a “Stop Diabetes” 5k Run at the American Woodmark building in Tahlequah. Registration begins at 7 a.m., and the race will start at 8:30 a.m. The 5k and fun run pre-registration fees are $10 and $5, respectively, while race day fees are $15 and $10. 7 a.m. – Cherokee Nation Healthy Nation will host the Locust Grove Fall Fest 5k Challenge in Locust Grove. Race begins and ends at the Locust Grove football field. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m., and the 5k will start at 8 a.m. The 5k and fun run pre-registration fees are $20 and $15, respectively, while race day fees are $25 and $20. Nov. 11

Cherokee Nation W.W. Keeler Complex, satellite offices, health centers and Sequoyah Schools will be closed for Veterans Day. Cherokee Nation W.W. Hastings Hospital urgent care and emergency department will remain open.

Nov. 12

8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. – Cherokee Nation Bartlesville Health Center will host a flu walk-in clinic for Cherokee citizens in the area. For more information, contact Rebecca Kidwell at 918-273-7523 or [email protected].

9 a.m. –The Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation is temporarily opening the Mutual Help/Rural Rental Homeownership waiting list for qualified Native American families inDelawareMuskogee and Rogers counties. HACN staff will be available to distribute and accept applications for three- and four-bedroom homes at the Jay, Sallisaw and Claremore HACN offices. The first 25 completed applications will be accepted at each office, and applicants seeking a four-bedroom unit must be a household of six. For more information, call 918-456-5482.

1 to 8 p.m. – Cherokee Nation’s registration department will be doing tribal citizenship new photo IDs at the Bible Holiness Annex building in Ochelata. Tribal Councilor Dick Lay will host a community meeting for District 12 at 5:30 p.m. with information on Cherokee Nation services. Food will be provided. Nov. 16

Nov. 21

6 to 7 p.m. – Cherokee Nation Cancer Program will host a Cancer Survivor gathering and Thanksgiving potluck dinner at the Healthy Living Center building #3, 1296 Skill Center Circle in Tahlequah. The gathering is open to all those who have been touched by cancer. Turkey and dressing will be provided. Survivors are asked to bring their favorite side dish and RSVP by Nov. 14. Throughout November the Cherokee Arts Center in Tahlequah also hosts the following weekly classes:

·         Saturdays, 10 a.m. to noon – Basic Assemblage taught by Robert Shinn

·         Thursdays, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. – Metalsmithing taught by Steve Mashburn

·         Saturdays, noon to 4 p.m. – Loom Weaving taught by Cherokee Nation Treasure Dorothy Ice
