Filing Deadline Extended for Oklahoma Flood Claims

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahomans with flood damage will have extra time to file their insurance claim. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has given National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policyholders an extra 180 days to file a claim.

“This extra time to file a claim will be beneficial for all those who suffered damage,” said Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John D. Doak. “This deadline extension gives home and business owners more time to make sure their claim is filed correctly.”

A flood insurance policy is separate from your homeowner’s policy which, in most cases, does not pay for flood claims. The NFIP is run by FEMA. It works with nearly 90 private insurance companies to offer flood insurance.

The new deadline gives a total of 240 days after the date of loss to provide proof of loss to your insurance company. For example, anyone who had damage from the storms on May 16 has until January 11, 2016 to submit the proof of loss.

FEMA will continue to monitor claim activity to determine if another extension is needed.
