Spread the love

Glen graduated in 1944 from Pioneer High School and spent many fun times in this close community with “cousins by the dozens” and his three brothers. Even at age 90, Glen proudly wore his Pioneer Mustang cap. While at Pioneer, he was the first “Douglas boy” to pitch for the school softball team, a tradition that continued for more than a decade, and he was the president of his senior class of eight students.

Glen joined the Navy after graduation and served until the close of World War II. While in the Navy, Glen convinced his high school sweetheart to hop a bus to Memphis, Tennessee, to tie the knot. Memphis had two bus stations, on opposite sides of the street, and Glen anxiously waited for her arrival at the wrong station. They eventually found each other, even without cell phones, and made their way to the Justice of the Peace. The two shared their lives, as Glen would say, for “68 years and 11 days.”

Glen attended Phillips University and graduated in 1948 from Enid Business College, both in Enid, Oklahoma, and in 1958 graduated from Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri. When asked his occupation, he would reply, “Jack-of-all-trades, master of none.” One of his first jobs outside working on farms was at a filling station. In those days, stations were full service and he often reminisced about the “good ole days” when attendants ran to greet customers, wash their windows, check their oil and tire pressure, and fill their tank. For a number of years Glen pastored small Baptist churches in Mapleton, Kansas, Sand Springs, Oklahoma, and Sapulpa, Oklahoma. Throughout this time, and afterwards, he also worked as a billing clerk at various truck lines and finally at Chandler Engineering in Tulsa, Oklahoma. While semi-retired, he almost became a house flipper, before that was the popular thing to do. However, that business plan did not get off the ground because he decided to move into the house.

For fun, Glen loved history and rarely failed to stop at roadside historical markers. He was an avid genealogist and traveled around the country researching at courthouses and cemeteries. He found one old family cemetery in disrepair and took up the task of bringing it back to order. He also enjoyed tinkering with automobiles and restored an old 1951 pickup. However, his greatest passions were studying and sharing insights from God’s Word and he taught adult Bible classes at various churches into his retirement years, as well as singing gospel hymns, especially with his three brothers.

Glen was preceded in death by his precious wife, Frances Jean (Snow) Douglas; his parents, Russell and Jane Douglas; and two brothers, Rex Douglas and Bob Douglas. He is survived by his three children: James Douglas and wife Suzy of Claremore, Oklahoma; Karen Roper of Garland, Texas; and Joan Swope and husband Mike of Owasso, Oklahoma; six grandchildren: Steve Reynolds and wife Karen of San Antonia, Texas; Tony Rey of Garland, Texas; Jennifer Hodges and husband Bryan of Claremore, Oklahoma; Lori Twomey and husband Don of Kingwood, Texas; Melanie Phillips and husband Todd of Owasso, Oklahoma; and Christie Douglas of Dallas, Texas; and six great-grandchildren: Hunter Reynolds, Tanner Reynolds, Isabella Rey, Jacob Hodges, Zachery Twomey, and Alexa Twomey, as well as a soon-to-be born great-grandson. His dear friend, Ruthie Flint, whom he adored and who brought him great joy and comfort during the last two years of his life, also survives him.

Funeral services will be Monday, January 29, at the Bethlehem Baptist Church, in Fairmont, Oklahoma, at 1:00 pm, followed by graveside at the Waukomis, Oklahoma, Cemetery. Pastor Tom Donaldson will officiate. Viewing will be provided at the church prior to the service. Arrangements and services were entrusted to Mowery Funeral Service of Owasso.
