beware02/22/2018 – Deceptive advertising brings many negative impacts to companies and consumers, and sometimes dangers. Legitimate local businesses suffer from people using such tactics.

We have all heard the stories of people being robbed or even murdered while meeting a  potential buyer or sellers for merchandise or services via CraigsList and other online sale sites.

What about the “free estimates” listings in random ads across the web?  Are you checking the person or business out before you let them in your door?

A recent Owasso break in, while the  homeowner was at home, led to an arrest Tuesday morning.  It also led  to us discovering  that the man arrested had been offering handyman type services through the local “NextDoor” app site.  He listed an address on the ad, one that we found checks back to the Quality Inn in Owasso.  A quick check of OSCN.net shows a lengthy history for this man that includes: protective orders, public intoxication, false declaration of ownership in pawn, unlawful possession of controlled drug, etc. His ad did have 1 good review.

Checking out business that you are unfamiliar with should be a must.  A quick google or OSCN check takes only minutes, and is in your best interest to search.

We reached out to  Lt Nick Boatman with the Owasso Police Department for thoughts on the matter.

Our advise is “just for citizens to be very selective with whom they allow in their homes. Take the extra time to do some research, check online reviews and references, ask contractors for valid state identification to confirm identity, as well as proof their business is insured.  When allowing contractors into your home, it’s always a good idea to have more than one person home with you.  Put valuables, high dollar items and firearms out of sight and be alert for suspicious behavior like them checking for alarms, unlocking windows or doors and wandering around your home.”

It is not just the random internet ads you should be checking out. Arm yourself with knowledge before buying a home, car or obtaining services. The Better Business Bureau is also a great source for information.  You can search any local business on their website at www.bbb.org.

There is good, bad and ugly everywhere. I honestly feel most businesses in our area are local citizens supporting themselves in a positive and helpful manner.  A quick 5 minute online check may save you a little heartache, money or more.
