Question:

I have a lot of inflammation in my nose and can’t breathe well. Is surgery my only option so I can breathe easy again?

Answer:

Unfortunately, the answer is not simply yes or no.  There are two factors to consider:  1) the mucosal lining of the nose (the pink/red tissue that lines the inside of the nose) and 2) the anatomy of the nose itself, which includes the external nose, septum, turbinates and sinus cavities.

The nasal mucosa can become swollen due to a large variety of causes, such as allergens in the environment, trauma/irritations, medications, other health problems and many more.  Identifying the cause of the swelling and treating it can decrease the inflammation of the nose and help you breathe better.  Your physician can help you identify some of the many causes and create a plan to improve your nasal health.

However, sometimes despite all the best efforts, the swelling remains or is intensified by the anatomical structure of the nose.  Surgery can address issues such as a deviated septum, inferior turbinate hypertrophy, nasal valve collapse or other structural components that can be contributing to the nasal airway obstruction.  There are many different surgical interventions to address what is not able to be fully addressed through more conservative measures.

Furthermore, physiological changes such as bleeding, changes in sense of taste or smell, or worsening nasal obstruction can be signs of something more serious and need to be addressed.

Have a discussion with your care provider to assure that you are not missing out on all the benefits provided by breathing through your nose!
