07/25/2023 – We are thrilled to announce that Lisa McBride, a history teacher at Owasso High School, has been honored as the 2023 Oklahoma History Teacher of the Year! This prestigious award is presented annually by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, a leading organization dedicated to K–12 American history education.

Having graduated from Oklahoma State University, McBride has been passionately teaching history at Owasso Public Schools since 2001. Her expertise extends to various levels, as she teaches AP European History, AP U.S. History, U.S. History, and Psychology to students in grades 9-12. Additionally, she serves as the department chair, showcasing her dedication to education.

In her application, McBride expressed her love for teaching history, emphasizing its relevance and the valuable lessons it offers. She strives to make history enjoyable and engaging for her students, recognizing that it is not just about dates and events—it is about real people, real problems, and how history shapes our present and future.

Her commitment to education and her students has garnered praise, as she was recommended for the award by Kristina Vrska, assistant principal at Owasso High School. Vrska praised McBride’s devotion, hard work, and her constant efforts to create an optimal learning environment for her students.

As the 2023 Oklahoma History Teacher of the Year, McBride will receive a $1,000 prize and a valuable archive of classroom resources. She will also be recognized at a local ceremony in her honor. Additionally, she joins the esteemed ranks of 53 finalists for the 2022 National History Teacher of the Year Award.
