The following is from the Owasso FOP:

02/19/2020 – We would like you to meet Gavin Procter! Gavin is the 17-year-old son of Brad and Deanna Procter. Gavin and his family need your help. Gavin is a student at Owasso High School. Gavin is also a former student-athlete with the Special Olympics team.

Gavin was born with a condition known as “Dystonia.” Dystonia is a movement disorder that causes a person’s muscles to contract uncontrollably. Gavin also suffers from auditory neuropathy. This condition causes hearing to be distorted to the point every sound is inaudible. About 3 months ago Gavin told his parents that he wanted to have surgery to have cochlear implants. Gavin admitted to them that he has been reading lips in order to try and understand what people are saying. The worsening ability to hear or NOT hearing has effected Gavin’s life. Gavin was taken to an audiologist and he was recommended for a hearing implant study. Once accepted into the study, Gavin was given the custom fit and molded implants. They were a huge success! Gavin was able to actually hear for the first time in his life!!!

Now comes the bad news… Upon checking his parent’s insurance, it was discovered there was a problem with Brad and Deanna’s insurance. They were informed that their insurance policy has an exclusion for hearing aids, and would not cover this miracle for Gavin. Gavin’s parents are now being forced to steal Gavin’s hearing away and give the hearing aids back.

Let me explain our involvement in this situation. Gavin’s parents are friends with an Owasso Police Officer, and upon hearing the story, the Owasso Cops for Kids Inc. was asked if we could help Gavin retain the gift of hearing. The Owasso Cops for Kids Inc. Foundation was created years ago to help bring Law Enforcement together with the community we serve, and to be able to reach out and help kids in need. That is what we intend to do, but we need your help. The cost of the custom-molded hearing aids is $3,441.57. If Gavin’s parents aren’t able to pay that amount by March 1, 2020, they will be forced to give the hearing aids back. PLEASE help us help Gavin!

The Owasso Cops for Kids Inc. has already donated $500 directly to the family. They then created this campaign knowing that our community will come together yet again and help out someone in need. Everyone deserves the gift of hearing! Please help Gavin keep his miracle gift of hearing!!
