Owasso: No. 1 City on the Rise in Oklahoma

NerdWallet considers population, employment and income growth

San Francisco, CA (September 12, 2014) – NerdWallet, a consumer advocacy website, recently conducted a study to find the fastest-growing cities in Oklahoma – and Owasso ranked first.

To find Oklahoma’s fastest-growing communities, NerdWallet evaluated 74 cities, towns and census-designated places and examined the following variables:

  • Population growth
  • Employment growth
  • Income growth

Just 13 miles outside Tulsa, the second-largest city in Oklahoma, Owasso topped our list with its state-high working-age population growth of 10.3%. Owasso, which has seen steady growth in housing since 1990, has become a regional hub for shopping. The city is home to over 100 unique stores along Highway 169, where it serves a customer base of about 450,000. Residents find employment opportunities at Whirlpool, Verizon and American Airlines, which alone employs over 6,000 people.

“Oklahoma is at the forefront of energy production, with almost every city on our list seeing its local economy directly or indirectly affected by the state’s energy boom,” said Kamran Rosen, an analyst with NerdWallet. “Our study has also discovered that the Oklahoma City metro area is growing rapidly with no signs of slowing down; six of our top 10 cities are within 30 miles of the state’s largest city,” said Rosen.

Other places in the top 20 include Mustang and Harrah. See the full study here.
