On Thursday, August 17th,2017 at approximately 9:10am, Owasso Police engaged in a brief, slow-speed, vehicular pursuit that began near 76th Street North and Mingo Road. An officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation in a nearby construction zone, and ended approximately 2 miles away, when the driver finally yielded in the School Speed Zone in front of Barnes Elementary located at 7809 East 76 Street North.

While the driver was failing to yield, the pursuing officer advised he observed the passenger digging in the center console of the vehicle, which increased the response level of backing officers, as did the close proximity of Owasso’s Barnes Elementary.

Luckily speeds never exceeded the posted speed limits during this event.  School operations were in no way affected by this incident and the incident was over before any lockdown took place.

Taken into custody as a result of this incident was 37yo Dewayne Hurd of Tulsa, for the original traffic violation, an Improper Lane Use, as well as Failing to Yield, No Driver’s License, Possession of Narcotics and 2 outstanding District Felony Arrest Warrants.  The passenger was detained but later released.
