ask the expertQuestion:

Is there anything that can be done to prevent damage from chronic sinus infections?

Answer:

Excellent question.  The best way to keep your sinuses healthy is to keep the nose clean and appropriately hydrated.  Believe it or not, a runny nose is a dry nose!  All of the natural hydration in the lining of the nose (nasal mucosa) is being carried away in the drainage.  Nasal saline spray or gel is available over the counter and can really help.  It’s ok to use daily or even multiple times a day.  Make sure not to spray or rub it against the septum (middle part of your nose) because it can cause irritation and bleeding.

If allergies or other irritations are causing inflammation of the nasal mucosa, then a daily nasal steroid spray can help to decrease the swelling.  These are available in prescription form as well as over the counter.

Another step is to avoid exposure to nasal irritations.  Smoke (primary or second hand), allergens, perfumes, dust, workplace exposures, windy conditions, and many more scenarios can further dry the nose and allow irritants to settle in the nasal mucosa.  This causes swelling, irritation, and further “running” of the nose (dryness).

Persistence of sinus symptoms beyond these steps should be evaluated by your health care professional.
