Spread the love

by Anna Dean

As a former collegiate basketball player and a youth coach, Travis Hunnicutt saw a need, stepped up to fill the void and Tulsa Basketball Academy was born. TBA offers weekly youth basketball training right here in Owasso for kids ages 3rd grade through high school.

“I began to have different parents of kids I had coached approach me independently, asking if I would start a program like this here in Owasso,” he says. “I had actually already begun to formulate plans to begin a program like this here in the community. So, when others began to ask this unsolicited, I knew the timing was right. With hundreds of youth basketball players in this area, we knew there was a significant need for organized, challenging and age-appropriate basketball fundamentals training.”

The program launched in May and offers weekly consistent basketball fundamentals training, with elements of competition and games worked into the training. The location for each session rotates among two to three facilities.

As owner and coach, Hunnicutt works alongside Lead Coach/Instructor Caleb Hass who also played collegiate basketball. Together, the pair offers over 25 years of youth basketball coaching experience. And even more importantly, they share a passion for encouraging kids through the game they love.

There are multiple options to choose from, paid on a monthly plan. If a student attends all of the sessions offered, the cost averages to only $6/session—an incredible value for the quality of instruction they receive. The first session is always FREE. Increasing the value, multi-child discounts and team discounts are available.

“The great thing about our program is that it’s not just for boys or girls,” Hunnicutt says. “We allow for both. This is so great for families that have multiple children that want to participate in a program like this.”

Hunnicutt is proud to be offering such a needed service to the community he loves.

“We love Owasso!” he says. “There are so many great families and people within this community. Another really cool thing about this program is we’ve been able to meet a lot of new, great kids and parents. It’s a blessing indeed to be in a family-oriented community like Owasso and the surrounding area.”

Tulsa Basketball Academy Full-Court Vision:

To display how preparation, hard work, daily disciplines, and trust can impact our lives positively. For Grades 3rd grade through 12th grade.

How We Teach: We focus on four areas:

Foundations – Faith is the first and most important foundation in our lives. Your kids will know Who we play for, Why we play, and How we play (all-out). We will challenge players to improve… but mastery of a skill is important before moving onto the next level.

Age Appropriate – It’s harder to un-learn a muscle memory and re-learn a new one than just learning the correct way for the first time. We believe and understand this and apply it to our methods.

Competitive – Competition is the great motivator // Let’s encourage and push each other to improve! We will challenge all to do their best and work to improve through competition.

Effort to Excellence – Why aspire to do something at all if you do not strive to be excellent in it? Let’s put our full energy to the goal of excellence (NOT perfection) in all we do here.

What We Teach: Skills, Skills, Skills – but we’re gonna have some fun, too!

  • Ball Handling (Dribbling / Passing)
  • Shooting / Scoring
  • Strategy
  • Defensive Skills and Positioning
  • Offensive Skills (with and without the ball)
  • Speed and Agility and Strength Improvement
  • WHY? In all things, we want to help players understand the WHY behind the do!
