ExpertQuestion:

I have a recurring rash on my leg that seems to come and go without any clear reason. This has been happening for years. Do you have any idea what this could be?

Answer:

Unfortunately, this will be a very difficult question to answer without some more specifics.  Dry, scaly, red or pink patches could represent eczema, fungus, psoriasis or even reactions to medications.  Red, bumpy, itchy rashes could be the result of contact dermatitis (allergic reaction to a topical product) or even razor burn.  Bumpy, flesh-colored rashes may actually be flat warts that can become quite widespread as a result of shaving.  Brown, dry spots may be seborrheic keratosis which is basically built-up, dry skin spots that are associated with aging.

The bottom line in this case would be that you will need to be seen to truly identify the nature of your rash.  In the meantime, gentle skin care is always prudent.  This would involve using soaps and shampoos that contain the fewest ingredients.  Remember, just because it looks or smells pretty, doesn’t mean it’s good for your skin.  It’s also important to try and take short showers rather than long and keep the water lukewarm.  After you get out of the bath or shower, pat yourself dry and apply a moisturizer that doesn’t contain a lot of extra ingredients such as coloring or scents.

Hope this helps!
