Special blood drive held in honor of Jason Dean : Owasso residents encouraged to give blood

TULSA, Okla. (June 1, 2015)  — On June 14, the American Red Cross and Misty Dean are partnering on a blood drive held in honor of Misty’s husband, Jason “The Rising Warrior” Dean.

In 2005, Jason Dean was found to have a low platelet count and he received the first of many

transfusions. Eventually, he was diagnosed with Evans syndrome, an autoimmune disease which uses the body’s own antibodies to attack its red blood cells and platelets. After chemotherapy and blood transfusions, Jason Dean was in remission.

In January, Jason Dean, now a father of three, was diagnosed with a rare, fast-growing form of cancer called plasmablastic lymphoma. He is currently undergoing chemotherapy and will likely need more blood and platelet transfusions.

To help replenish the blood supply and raise awareness of the ongoing need for blood, Misty Dean is sponsoring the upcoming blood drive in honor of her husband.

“One thing Jason’s two rare illnesses have in common is that he received blood with both of  them,” said Misty Dean. “We’ve learned through both experiences how important it is for people to remember to donate blood.”

The blood drive held in Jason Dean’s honor falls on World Blood Donor Day. World Blood Donor Day’s objective is to motivate regular blood donors to continue giving blood and people in good health who have never given blood to begin doing so.

With school out of session and many regular donors traveling and vacationing, the summer is an especially difficult time to collect enough blood to meet the needs of hospital patients. Blood donors with all types, particularly O negative, A negative and B negative, are urged to make an appointment.

Monetary donations can also be made to Jason Dean’s Relay for Life team online or at the blood drive to Misty Dean or American Cancer Society personnel on site.

How to donate blood

Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
