OPD K-9 Program

As many of you may have seen in the local media recently, “Mo” is OPD’s newest K-9 Officer. The name Mo was chosen to honor longtime OPD Detective and K-9 handler Bill “Mo” Mozingo, who passed away unexpectedly in November 2014. Mo and his handler Officer Matt Goodell are currently completing their certification training and should be patrolling the streets of Owasso within the next few weeks.

Community involvement is an essential part of any effective law enforcement agency and the residents of Owasso are a great example of that partnership. Mo was purchased exclusively with private donations raised by the Friends of Owasso Police Foundation. In 2014, K-9 Shadow was donated to the Owasso Police Department by Josh Kirby, a law enforcement officer in Texas with family ties to the city. OPD’s two other K-9’s, Benny and Sampson, were also obtained through private donations. OPD now has four active K-9 teams, all trained to detect illegal drugs and all obtained as a direct result of the community’s generosity. This increase in OPD’s drug detection capability is part of a broader effort to become more proactive in the areas of street level crime and drug trafficking with the ultimate goal of making Owasso a very unattractive place for criminals to conduct their “business”. Coupled with the focused efforts of our uniformed patrol officers, detectives and the newly reactivated full-time Street Crimes Unit, the addition of the new K-9 teams should put criminals on notice that Owasso is not a place they want to be. A truly heartfelt thank you to all the citizens of Owasso for helping OPD keep up as our city has grown over recent years. We look forward to working with you to improve our community in the years to come.
