You’ve probably heard the term CrossFit, but for the non-workout  buff, you may not really know what it consists of.

Sean Garner, owner of CrossFit Primus in Owasso, describes it as “a group style personal training class where the workouts are short and intense, always different and consist of moves you find in everyday life. Our specialty is not specializing.”

According to CrossFit.com, it is the principle strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide. The program is designed for universal scalability, making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience.

“We’ve used our same routines for elderly individuals with hip replacements and U.S. Special Forces one month from deployment,” Garner says. “We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs.”

A core, strength and conditioning system built on varied functional movements at high intensity, the reward is an overall fitness level unmatched by traditional means. The 10 general physical skills of CrossFit include: cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy. And the added bonus of a group setting is, ultimately, a family atmosphere.

So is it really that effective? CrossFit Primus Owasso member Cameron Rose can vouch for all of the above. He describes it as “an organized, continuous workout designed to keep you moving. You will get a better workout in 15 to 20 minutes than if you spent two hours at the gym by yourself. I stay committed to it because I have seen better results in a month than from a year going to other gyms. The CrossFit community is a family of support that makes workouts and your time there enjoyable.”

Garner, a former firefighter who discovered CrossFit as a means to be in the best physical shape for his demanding job, echoes the same. “When you
come to a class at CrossFit Primus, you become part of a family,” he says. “As crazy as it may sound, this place is not just a gym. It is a family of people who truly care about you. At most gyms, you go to the treadmill, put your iPod in and run by yourself. At CrossFit Primus when you’re not at a class, people are calling and texting you, making sure you’re OK and don’t need anything.Words can’t describe what happens here.”

Open since July 2011, CrossFit Primus offers group classes, CrossFit Primus Foundations, teens classes (ages 12 to 18), and personal training. For detailed class descriptions, visit crossfitprimus.com/programs/.

If CrossFit sounds like the program you’ve been looking for, check out CrossFit Primus’ free intro class every Saturday at 11 a.m. Simply call to reserve your spot. All new members who attend the Saturday intro class receive the CrossFit Primus Foundations class free also.

“The Foundations program is for the individual who is new to CrossFit and wishes to ramp up into our fast-paced group CrossFit classes,” Garner says. “So whether you are an athlete new to this workout program or just getting off the couch, this class can get you ready.”

While CrossFit is the program, CrossFit Primus is specifically the name of the Owasso gym and for good reason. “Primus” is Latin for prime and stands firmly for the purpose of getting clients in the best shape of their lives, achieving their goals and beyond. “We want our clients to live the life they were designed to live and be the people they were created to be,” Garner says. “We are family. We are Primus.”
