Spread the love

Owasso residents will soon have a local spot to express their creative side at The Copper Kiln, a contemporary ceramic studio. Customers can select an item to paint and choose their own paint colors along with additional design options, such as stickers, sponges, stamps, etc.  You can even bring your own design to copy onto your ceramic piece. After painting, the item is left at the studio to be fired in the kiln and turned into a one-of-a-kind masterpiece available for pick up a few days later.

Ceramic items range in size, shape and price (most from $5 to $20), so there’s something for everyone’s taste and budget, from cups, plates, bowls, and spoon rests to picture frames, vases, animals, canisters and more. There is a $5 studio fee, which includes use of the supplies and firing.

Drinks, including coffee, are available for purchase, and the studio can accommodate up to 45 guests at one time, making it an ideal party spot.

Penny Hamrick – Owner, Copper Kiln

Owner Penny Hamrick says Owasso is the perfect location for this type of business. “I live and work here and don’t like going to Tulsa to entertain my own children, and I feel others here are of the same opinion,” she says. “This is a family-oriented community, and people enjoy spending time together whether it is with their family, their church group, friends, scout troops, women’s clubs, etc.  I know I have a group of girls I have coffee with each week, and I imagine we aren’t the only ones that would love a morning away with something fun to do at a reasonable cost!”

As someone who enjoys painting pottery and seeing the finished product, The Copper Kiln is an idea that Hamrick has been entertaining for years, but she was waiting for the right time. With her children getting older, she decided to finally take the leap. Her hope is that it becomes known as a place for Owasso residents to hang out and relax while stretching their creative muscles.

“When you sit down to paint with family and friends and have no other distractions, it’s amazing how much you realize the value of those loved ones and their company,” she says. “We look forward to celebrating milestones with the citizens of Owasso—you can paint for any holiday or celebration, and we will even host your party here.

“ It’s a great idea for teachers, mothers, grandmothers, Father’s Day, Christmas, birthdays, birth announcements, wedding gifts, anniversaries, team building, Valentine’s Day, or even no occasion at all. We have even had some team players inquire about making a gift together for their coach.”
The Copper Kiln’s Grand Opening is June 29, also the anniversary of Hamrick’s mother’s passing. “So it’s kind of a big day for us,” she says—a proper way to honor her memory by offering Owasso a family- friendly gathering place where memories can be made.
The Copper Kiln is located at 122 S. Main St., between Bill and Ruth’s and Fire ‘n the Hole. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
