Verneil "Sam" HendersonVerneil Samuel “Sam” Henderson II was born July 14, 1945, in Independence, Missouri, to Verneil Samuel and Marguerite Frances Whitten Henderson. He died Friday, July 26, 2019, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the age of 74 years. Sam completed his secondary education in Artesia, New Mexico, and graduated with the Artesia High School Class of 1965. He continued his education at Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma. Sam was a veteran of the armed forces having served his country honorably with the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He worked several jobs in his career, mostly in sales starting with Levitz Furniture, Bowman’s Furniture, then at Cameron University as director of the bookstore from 1976 to 1982, Super Turf, and Color Tile. He also owned and operated his own mattress store and antique business. Sam was an avid outdoorsman and loved his job as a hunting and fishing guide while in New Mexico. He also enjoyed collecting rocks and horse racing. Sam was married January 8, 1996, in Decatur, Texas, to Laura Anita Ratliff. They had made their home in Owasso, Oklahoma, in 1997. They have been faithful members of First Baptist Church of Owasso.

Cole Boyd, Steel Boyd, and Cameron Lott
Two brothers; Charles William Henderson and wife Lillian
John Whitten Henderson and wife Gina
Sister; Patricia Ann Henderson McCurry
Sister-in-law; Shari Henderson
And a host of nieces, nephews, and other friends and relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Margaret Belle Giles, brother, James Lindsey Henderson, and son, Verneil Samuel Henderson III.
 
Funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2019, at First Baptist Church in Owasso with Pastor Paul Purifoy officiating. Committal service with graveside military honors will be held 2:00 p.m. at Fort Gibson National Cemetery in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma. The family requests memorial contributions be made in Sam’s memory to Folds of Honor Foundation, Department #13, Tulsa, Oklahoma, 74182, or at [email protected]. Arrangements and services were entrusted to Mowery Funeral Service of Owasso.
