How frequently should I really be doing self breast exams? Every month? Every three months?
Answer:
Some women perform self breast exams monthly and others perform them less frequently. What is most important is to be aware of your breasts and notice when something does not feel or look right. For instructions on performing a self breast exam, click here for information from the American Cancer Society. Also, we have handouts in our office regarding proper self breast exam techniques. Please feel free to come by and help yourself.
Additionally, we recommend that women between the ages of 21 and 39 have a clinical breast exam (mammogram) every two to three years, then yearly after that.
