A D&C, or dilation and curettage, is an outpatient surgery that is usually done to address irregular bleeding or a miscarriage. It involves dilating (spreading out) your cervix then removing the contents of your uterus. A regular period should usually start about two to six weeks after a D&C, but can vary greatly depending on the reason for the procedure.

If you had a D&C due to a miscarriage, feeling normal again may take more time. This is especially true if you were over eight weeks pregnant as your hormone levels need time to return to normal. Additionally, you may feel depressed due to the miscarriage. If you have not started a normal period within eight weeks of the procedure, speak with your physician as this could be a sign of a rare complication.
